Artistic Director

Terry Burgler is a professional director, actor, writer and educator with a notable record of achievement over the past thirty years.  He has performed on the Globe Theatre stage in London, and has acted and directed at numerous regional theatres across the country, including McCarter Theatre, the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, Stage/West and TheatreVirgina, where he served for 13 seasons and still ranks as the most successful Artistic Director in that theatre's 50 year history.  For four years he was Artistic Director at Porthouse Theatre here in Northeast Ohio, presiding over record-breaking seasons that garnered significant critical praise as well.  He resigned his position there to be able to pursue his passion for Shakespeare as one of the two founding Artistic Directors of the Ohio Shakespeare Festival.  Mr. Burgler holds a BA with Honors from Princeton University and an MFA from the University of Virginia.  He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers (SSDC) and Actors' Equity Association (AEA).  Previous Shakespearean roles include Polonius, Falstaff, Prospero, Touchstone, Sir Toby Belch, Mercutio, Bottom, and Iago.

Nancy Cates Nancy Cates
Artistic Director

ohioshakespeare@aol.com

Nancy Cates is an honors graduate of the University of Virginia, and has directed and/or produced over 150 productions in the last twenty-eight years for regional, LORT, university, community, and dinner theatres from Ohio to Virginia, and all states in between.  She has embraced theatrical genres from Shakespeare (The Two Gentlemen of Verona, Macbeth) to sex farce (I Love My Wife, No Sex Please, We're British), from comedy (Hay Fever, Social Security) to drama (All My Sons, The Road to Mecca) and from the Avante Garde (On the Verge, Sex Drugs Rock and Roll) to the Old Standard (The King and I, West Side Story).  Having directed more than twenty, Nancy has a particular fondness for the musical review, and staged two favorites, Oh, Coward! and Side By Side By Sondheim here at OSF in recent seasons.  Her experiences directing Oh, Coward! under the stars at Stan Hywet were recorded as part of the BBC radio series Soul Music, making her feel especially honored to be the only American included as an expert on Noel Coward performance.  This past fall Nancy had the pleasure of directing yet another Oh, Coward! at Coach House Theatre in Akron, and this winter Ken Ludwig's Moon Over Buffalo at Weathervane Playhouse.  Other local directing endeavors include eight other productions for Weathervane (Lend Me A Tenor, A Man for All Seasons, Blithe Spirit), OSF (Swingtime Canteen, Always... Patsy Cline, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas), The Players Guild (Tale of the Allergist's Wife) and Porthouse Theatre (Pump Boys and Dinettes, The Foreigner, Ain't Misbehavin').  Nancy is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and has won seven sets of regional newspaper critics' awards for Best Play (or Musical) and Best Director.
